A look back.

For the first post of our shop blog, we're going to look back to what a nice time we had last year at Clearwater Festival. We built a number of our Cathance River Stools to sell at the festival.

One of the great privileges of our craft is in sharing what we love to do, with other artists and craftspeople. In particular, we often get to give something back to our favorite musicians for making such good music. On the last day of the festival, our friends Jay Ungar and Molly Mason stopped by to say hello and what do you know? They just happened to open their fiddle and mandolin cases and gave us a little taste of what they do best right there in our booth!

As they were packing up and starting to say goodbye, we asked if they would like to take a pair of our stools home, since they seemed to enjoy playing on them so much. Just our way of expressing thanks for making such great music.

To those who are familiar with Jay and Molly, Jay is known internationally for his fiddle playing, especially familiar is his waltz "Ashokan Farewell" used as the theme in Ken Burns' 1990 documentary, The Civil War. Molly is known for her work with the Powdermilk Biscuit Band on A Prairie Home Companion as well as her work with Jay over the last 30 years or so. Together with Jay's daughter Ruth, they've been a powerhouse musical family for a generation.

We also invited Sara Watkins to stop by our booth and pick out a stool. We enjoy her music so much that its the least we can do to give her something back. We received a nice thank you note from her as well as a copy of her self-titled solo album. Well, thank you Sara for making such beautiful music.

If you're not familiar with Sara's music, you may be familiar with her as the fiddle and voice of neo-bluegrass band Nickel Creek. Since Nickel Creek went on indefinite hiatus, Sara has been busy building a solo career with a busy touring schedule, appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, and recording a solo album produced by Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones. (The word on the street is she is in the running to be Garrison Keillor's successor....) If you haven't already, go check out Sara's website or Facebook page and give her latest album a listen; you won't be disappointed.

That's all for now, check back soon for the latest shop news.
